Grant County, WA Planning Department

I want a simple farm shop where my farm guys and my kids and I can repair our equipment and store stuff. The nearest neighbor is well over a mile away. This is about the simplest type of building you can imagine outside of a shed or carport.

When I first started investigating this project, I was really enthusiastic about the Grant County handouts that allow people to do their own work.

Unfortunately, when I asked about using these, I was told that I could not as this was for a farm business instead of a “private” person.

Washington state farms already have a very difficult time competing when we have a $17 / hr minimum wage while other states only have $7 / hr and Mexico farms only pay $17 / day… But we have to price our crops at the same rate as those others.

What I don’t understand is how a building can be safe for a “private” person and their family to use, but the building will somehow fall down if it is used by a farm and is unsafe?

My farm already loses money and the additional cost imposed by government requirements here is massive. The quotes I am getting are nearly a whole year of salary for a farm hand. $30,000.00+.

It is the same problem in housing, if it costs $200k per home to jump through all the red tape hoops, then our state has a housing crisis because no one can build affordably.

We need to start cutting all the red tape and government regulations.
