Tariffs

The entire purpose of tariffs is to protect industries and businesses and workers in your country. Tariffs do this by allowing prices to rise, signalling to entrepreneurs and investors that putting their money into this area will be relatively safe and provide good returns.

Trump’s tariffs were a good idea, but he is destroying this now by trying to reduce the price of food and allowing imports again. Now investors and entrepreneurs view this as risky and having poor returns.

America has many laws that vastly raise the cost of doing business here: minimum wage laws, overtime laws, insurance laws, environmental laws, licensing laws, etc. The effect of all of these rules has been that countries without these laws that use slave labor and zero environmental protection like China have been able to sell goods for far cheaper than American businesses can make them. Most American businesses from steel production to farmers to factories have gone out of business.

This is a major national security threat; our country cannot produce its own food, it cannot produce goods it needs, and it cannot produce weapons. We desperately need strong tariffs even if it means higher prices for consumers. Either that or we would have to entirely deregulate businesses so they can compete on an even playing field with China.
