So who is this guy who has appeared on 60 Minutes, Larry King Live and has his own television shows?
Who is this guy who thinks he can share the mighty name of Joel?
Joel Osteen has not yet had major sex scandals, drug scandals or molestation scandals like the other megachurch pastors: Pat Robertson, Al Sharpton, Ted Haggard, Paul Barnes, D.E. (Earl) Paulk, Jimmy Swaggert, Jim Bakker, William Dodd and too many others to possibly mention here. What Joel Osteen DOESN’T do is the real question.
In his sermons, Joel Osteen does not talk about God. Joel Osteen instead talks about almost everything except God. He has a television ministry, a massive church, $43 million a year in tithes and another $36 million a year in mailed in donations, but he won’t talk about God. He, like Pastor Kevin Gerald, talks about more pleasant topics, such as donating money to him and positive thinking. He has written two books, the second of which sold 3 million copies, but his books don’t really talk about God either. It’s just his bland and boring advice on how to live a happy life that has been thought of by other people first, “Think positively about yourself” and other such drivel.
What does Joel Osteen say when people ask him about why he does not discuss God or Jesus Christ or sin or what you need to do to go to Heaven? “That’s not my gift.” What are you doing being a freaking megachurch pastor then, bonehead?!
If you are going to try to operate a religious scam, at least make it religious! I actually think that Joel Osteen operating a secular “Christian” church is more of a scandal than Ted Haggard and his transsexual prostitutes and meth! (Though not nearly as funny of a scandal).
Joel Osteen didn’t even found his megachurch; instead the business was handed down to him by his father. When Joel Osteen became the head pastor of his church, he had only preached ONE sermon in his entire life- and that was the week before. Joel Osteen does not have any training in the Bible (seminary, degrees, etc.), which is probably why he doesn’t want to talk about it much.
My loyal readers have pointed out to me many times that the ridiculous actions of leaders in religion do not invalidate their beliefs. They are absolutely correct on this. However, there has never been anything that VALIDATES their beliefs either. The Flying Spaghetti Monster has the same amount of evidence on his side as most other gods. Here is another question I put to you: Please find me a single megachurch pastor who is NOT a scam-running, meth-eating, prostitute-abusing criminal. Anyone?

Many people have been discussing Joel Osteen in the comments and making statements about his beliefs, behavior and preaching methods that show a distinct lack of understanding of his profit driven motives. Below I have added a video of Joel Osteen on Larry King Live where he dances around the core question of the Christian faith: What does it take to get to heaven? Joel Osteen hems and haws and won’t even say that people of different religions won’t make it to heaven.
The partial transcript for Joel Osteen’s interview with Larry King is below. I have basically pulled out the most pertinent excerpts to the point I have tried to make on televangelist Joel Osteen.

LARRY KING, CNN HOST: Tonight, Joel Osteen, evangelism’s hottest rising star, pastor for the biggest congregation in the United States… Pastor Joel Osteen is here for the hour…. Joel Osteen is the author of the number one “New York Times” best-seller, “Your Best Life Now.” There you see its cover. “Seven Steps to Living at Your Full Potential.” There is now a compendium been published called “Your Best Life Now Journal,” a guide to reaching that full potential. Larry King knows Joel Osteen Ministries is huge and tries to play nice with him throughout the interview.
KING: Why are you a preacher?
JOEL OSTEEN: You know, I never was for 17 years. I worked with my dad there at the church. He tried to get me to minister. I didn’t have it in me. I worked behind the scenes. I loved doing production and things. But when my father died, I just knew — I don’t know how to explain it, it sounds kind of odd, but I just knew down to here I was supposed to step up to the plate and pastor the church. And it was odd because I had never preached before. But I just knew I was supposed to do it.
Hmmm… either God gave him the “calling” or he was scared of losing his father’s multi-million dollar preaching business.
KING: But don’t you think if people don’t believe as you believe, they’re somehow condemned?
JOEL OSTEEN: You know, I think that happens in our society. But I try not to do that. I tell people all the time, preached a couple Sundays about it. I’m for everybody. You may not agree with me, but to me it’s not my job to try to straighten everybody out. The Gospel called the good news. My message is a message of hope, that’s God’s for you. You can live a good life no matter what’s happened to you. And so I don’t know. I know there is condemnation but I don’t feel that’s my place.
Joel Osteen comes right out and says that he will refuse to condemn sinners. He is too afraid, it’s not his place, he just wants to spew bland niceties… hmmm.
LARRY KING: Where were you ordained? OSTEEN: I was ordained from the church there, Lakewood, under my dad’s ministry.
LARRY KING: So you didn’t go to seminary?
JOEL OSTEEN: No, sir, I didn’t.
LARRY KING: They can just make you a minister?
JOEL OSTEEN: You can, you can.
Wow. Joel Osteen never even attended Bible school or classes for future preachers. No wonder he is so clueless about Biblical theology.
LARRY KING: Is it hard to lead a Christian life?
JOEL OSTEEN: I don’t think it’s that hard. To me it’s fun. We have joy and happiness. Our family — I don’t feel like that at all. I’m not trying to follow a set of rules and stuff. I’m just living my life.
LARRY KING: But you have rules, don’t you?
JOEL OSTEEN: We do have rules. But the main rule to me is to honor God with your life. To life a life of integrity. Not be selfish. You know, help others. But that’s really the essence of the Christian faith.
Of course its not hard for Joel Osteen to lead a Christian life. BECAUSE HE’S NOT!!!
LARRY KING: What if you’re Jewish or Muslim, you don’t accept Christ at all?
JOEL OSTEEN: You know, I’m very careful about saying who would and wouldn’t go to heaven. I don’t know …
LARRY KING: If you believe you have to believe in Christ? They’re wrong, aren’t they?
JOEL OSTEEN: Well, I don’t know if I believe they’re wrong. I believe here’s what the Bible teaches and from the Christian faith this is what I believe. But I just think that only God with judge a person’s heart. I spent a lot of time in India with my father. I don’t know all about their religion. But I know they love God. And I don’t know. I’ve seen their sincerity. So I don’t know. I know for me, and what the Bible teaches, I want to have a relationship with Jesus.
The last exchange between Larry King and Joel Osteen hits the nail on the head of everything that is wrong with the Joel Osteen Ministry. All it is is fluff. He can’t even defend the single core belief of Christianity- that a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is a requirement to gain access to Heaven.

He twists scripture around to serve his own purposes of mass produced drivel. My question to Joel Osteen is where in the Bible does it say Christians have a “right to total victory” over physical pain, financial problems and other issues? Did he completely miss the book of Job or the trials and tribulations that the early Christians had to suffer under the Romans? I don’t think that Joel Osteen has ever even read the Bible.

Further discussion: Joel Osteen megachurch building – Joel Osteen paid the city of Houston $90,000,000 to remodel the former home of NBA team Houston Rockets and an additional $14,000,000 to lease the building for 30 years. Preacher Joel Osteen’s megachurch does not even own the building! Pastor Joel Osteen doesn’t care though- he’ll be dead by then and this church is all about him. The most interesting thing about the new church is that there is not a SINGLE cross in the whole building! Want to know why? Joel Osteen says that he wants to remove all “stumbling blocks” from the way of people coming to his church and being comfortable. Since when has Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross been a STUMBLING BLOCK for faith?! The scandal here is that the Joel Osteen is doing and saying blasphemous things… and no one is calling him out on it. The pastor of the largest church in America won’t even follow the basic tenets of Christianity!

Bible Verses that Condemn Megachurch Pastor Joel Osteen
I have had quite a few people post in the comments asking what does it really matter what Joel Osteen believes if he’s helping people? If Joel Osteen teaches nice things, isn’t it okay for him to be a Christian pastor? I understand that my opinions of right and wrong should not sway you, but I ask you to consider what the Bible says on the matter. First, let’s take the Bible verses that are the standard definition of who is a Christian:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (NIV)
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 (NIV)
For the wages of sin is death. Romans 6:23 (NIV)
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faithand this not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godnot by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)
To summarize, the only way to be saved and go to heaven is by the grace of Jesus and by faith in God. These are the basic verses that every Christian who has accepted Christ knows. Now for the verses that clearly state that only Christians who believe the above will go to Heaven:
-John 3:3: no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.
-John 3:15: everyone who believes in him [Jesus] may have eternal life.
-John 3:18: whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of Gods one and only Son.
-John 14:6: Jesus answered: No one comes to the Father except through me
-Acts 3:23: And it shall be, that every soul that shall not hearken to that prophet, shall be utterly destroyed from among the people. (ASV)
-Acts 4:12: Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved
-Romans 10:9: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved
-Hebrews 9:28: he [Christ] will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him
-1 John 5:12: he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
The nine quoted verses above clearly state that only Christians can go to Heaven. Now, if Joel Osteen truly believed and was a pastor of a Bible-based church, would he preach a false message of hope to people? Joel Osteen is essentially subverting the word of God, which motivated me to write this post. I am not sure why Joel would do this, but my postulation (as above) is that he is doing it for financial gain. Joel Osteens father was a pastor and he has been a pastor for a long time now and he should know better than most people the MOST basic tenets of Christianity. Ignorance is an excuse for new Christians (as long as they work at it), but not for a shepherd of the flock.
Do you know what the Bible says about false teachers like Joel Osteen?
-2 Timothy 4:3,4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth , and be turned aside to fables.
-Matthew 7:15,16 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheeps clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits.
-Acts 20:29-31 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves . Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.
-2 Peter 2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
-2 Peter 3:16,17 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked;
-Colossians 2:8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
-Hebrews 13:9 Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.
The Bible is very, very harsh in its condemnation of people who change, twist or leave out parts of its doctrine. False leaders (Joel Osteen), to me, are more disgusting than someone who is a hypocrite (Ted Haggard).

Why do I care what Joel Osteen does or doesnt do in his church, especially seeing that I am not religious? People who are cheats, fakes, and phonies really bother me. I have written quite a few other posts on various community leaders who lead people astray for their own personal gain. My tax dollars go to support Joel Osteen (every church in America is exempt from taxes, but Joel Osteen is making millions tax-free teaching his Prosperity Message when he is basically just another self-help guru). I also am very wary of megachurch pastors (I used to attend one and have seen many on television)- they often seem to be some of the craziest people (Jim Jones-Want some Kool Aid?)
I must be missing something when watching and reading the little bit of literature that is sent out. Never once on a televised program have I ever heard him ask for a donation of money likewise in the mailings I have received. I also don’t understand you stating he never speaks of God in his sermons. He brings the word of God out in a way that is positive and doesn’t threaten us to hell if we don’t heed the teachings. I always refer to him as the Anthony Robbins of Christian teaching. It is unfortunate that your life is so empty that you choose to defamate a man who has been able to motivate and help people simply because you share the same first name. I suggest you turn this negative energy towards a more positive use and do some good for the world we live in instead of trying to find vault. None of us are perfect including Joel Olsteen but he is a good person. My mother sent her limited resources towards some of the past ministers you speak of and I believe you are inherently flawed in comparing Joel Olsteen to them. As I stated he has never solicted a donation from me in any way shape or form which those other ministries were on TV and mass mailings were always with their hands out. Caring for an aging parent I have limited income but if I did have extra funds I would not hesitate in giving a donation. I beleive that is what has happened as people have found him credible free of scandals and his approach is far more uplifting that the Mormon sermons I was subjected too as a child and into my teens when refused to go church anymore. Many churches use the Lord to control the masses by fear and intimidation. At 40 after being absent from churches for 25 years even though I tried to find one that made sense it was a four-square church that helped me to find the way back to christianity, and this ministers sermons were spirited with a similiar style as Joel. Now 11 yrs later not in the same area anymore I am grateful for Joel being available to those of us who enjoy his ministry even though we don’t live in Texas.

The man is a nut, pure and simple. Don’t bash him for not talking about any god, whether it is christian god, muslim god or whatever. it is a free country, he can talk about what he wants to. if you don’t like him, do the right thing and not listen to him. don’t send him your money either. but you can look into his eyes and see something is just not right in him. he is a little off balance upstairs, as are most religious people. so he really is not much different from you guys.

I’ve listened to Joel a number of times. And unlike our disgruntled buddy up above, who seems to be eating his own liver in jealousy or something–Joel does talk about God. He gives hope. His words hit home.
I do credit the gentleman above. for trying to keep in christ in his words.
He tells us to believe in God, and the bible btw does tell us to live in victory. That satan has no true power over us.
God and christ do NOT tell us that a life of misery is what we must seek-nor that it is the path to God. We all pass thru trials, and tests, but those are determined by God, and not the opinion of man. Money and material things are not the focus. They are a by-product of the wealth of Christ available to all of us. When we tithe, and give of the spirit. These things are returned to us tenfold.
The bible tells us that death, and things of this world hold no power over us. And Joel telling you to claim victory over these things is also telling you to recognise when you mind is set and living in defeat.
To condemn someone because they have money, charisma, and looks is judgemental, pathetic jealousy, and spawned of satan. It does not giving God His proper due. Read your bible a little more. Christ came to give us great news. To promise us blessings, while we live here, as well as when we arrive in heaven. What we do with our blessings, will also be judged.
To focus on things material, looks ect, is the path of camel thru eye of needle–paradox. But, the reciept of gifts and blessings from God is inevitable with faith and obedience.

Here is the thing, this is not what Jesus intended the church to be. Jesus prayer was that Gods will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. I don’t ever reading any scripture that says life is suppose to be a happy go lucky all the time..believe in me God. No, it says we must take up our cross, as Jesus did..from what I have learned and seen about Joel Osteen what he teaches most of this is not of God…He makes Christians look bad, vengences is mine declares the Lord. I pray that one day Joel will see Gods will and repent to those he has mislead.
These things that you say are all good, I agree with you that listening to these words helped you, by the way I love Joyce Meyer…but the thing is is what Joel is teaching IS not all biblical he does not teach the hole truth such as we are all still sinners, and all fall short of the glory of God. Yes he teaches on how God wants you to have this great life, but I think he forgets to let people know that not all are going to have great cars, big houses, wonderful jobs with wonderful pay….did Jesus live a life such as this? All these material things such as he proposes in his sermons that we will have if we follow God. From the first time I heard him I thought he was miss leading, if he has helped people great, I just pray that he does it just as Jesus did….

The dude who put this website up says that Joel never talks about God in his sermons…we’ll, the few times I have watched Olsteen’s show he has mentioned God once or twice on each show…the problem is that Olsteen preaches a “ME” gospel rather than a “He” gospel..meaning JESUS. We are not to keep thinking about “ME” rather we are to be thinking about Jesus and how we can replicate his life and actions to the world.
The entire theme of the Bible is God’s holiness and humankind’s sinfulness and how much God loves us that He made a way to set things straight through Jesus going to the cross for our wrongdoing. That’s it! Nothing more. That is the “Gospel” in it’s entirety in case someone reading always wondered what it means to “share the gospel with others”.
Olsteen and his clones like my best friend keep wanting to tap into the “blessings” and abundant and prosperious life that they say Jesus teaches…well, scripture does teach those things but it is about prospering and having an abundance of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfullness, Gentleness and Self-control. Not the boat, cars and houses that we wont, drive, ride in or live in when we are dead.
The Prosperity doctrine simply does not work in most parts of the poor world. It’s a slap in the face to all of Africa…tell those people and kids that they must have the faith of a mustard see and they can change their circumstances…YIKES! Enough said…

Laura i hate to tell you but Joyce myers is as big a false teacher as the rest of the false ones……she teaches the same mess, she says you can speak you own world in to being, she says things like, well if you don`t pray a certain way or give enough or have enough faith, then you will stay sick, but she is`nt alone, there are alot of them that teach this, they are from coast to coast….myers has her own comunity, and only her family live there, so the innernet says…it also says there are armed gards at the gate, and only a select few are permitted, has her own air strip for her, someone said 10 mill. jet aircraft……….but i don`t care what these people have, on resurection morning wealth won`t mean a thing….

I use to love watching Rev Osteen every Sunday but for months he has not come on in the Baltimore area. “What’s up” I love the guy and I miss his messages.
Jesus Christ, seriously, can any of you people spell or articulate yourself properly? Joel Osteen should donate some of that money to the education system. Most of these comments are ridiculous. Not all of the comments, but most. If any of you are wanting to defend Joel Osteen, you could least use spell check. The American school system is disappointing. Based on these comments, a majority of these people have a 4th grade reading level.
How about this, believe in what you want, but for the love of God turn off the TV, the internet and READ A BOOK. Read the bible, something with paper and words. Anybody remember that?
So, sad and pathetic.
While I don’t believe promotion of Israel and Iran to be a warring nations, I do believe what else Pastor Hagee has said has some good ground. When my father who was divorced came to my apartment one time, we watched John Hagee. It was if God was using Mr. Hagee as a conduit of scrutiny to my father for the fact, my father was now a christian divorcee.
I said to my Dad, see, Hes talking to you. It was a scrutinizing message about not shacking up which was oddly enough what my father was doing at the time with a new woman. Soon enough my father and the woman got married, not because of the ‘shack up’ broadcast, but just because in general it’d be ‘right’ then to ‘shack up’.
Years later it is now. I have seen God work more miracles through my father and this, once, ‘shack up’ woman in the past year than my whole life. I would refer to her as ‘broad’ but when I see how God DOES give a renewed spirit, that is the furthest terminology I could think to label her. These people are now sewing missionary work seeds and numerous numerous coincidences that cannot be explained have happened. Just recently they were telling me about how left and right in the oddest of places, anonymous people are referring to Ivory Coast and an orphanage there. I was in a form of disbelief almost at the rate these things were happening to them as these two are now African Mexican and inter-city missionaries.
But it wasn’t because they were out spending church money or because they were doing this or that on their own. These things have been happening because they have been praying day and night, early in the AM, at work, before bed. I am now (kind of) glad that my parents divorce has resulted in my dad and his wife becoming Christians that the Lord can use in these end times. You see my mom is somewhat dead in her faith as she has not the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Praying for this woman has not seemed to get through. I am defenseless to her attacks on me when I get home from my dad and his wifes home.
I get torn a new one from my mom as I see the regret for joy for the fact that we have all of heaven to commune, and that if God is working through my dad and his wife, he can work through her too. Well, she doesn’t see it from that point of view. She tells me, “I don’t believe all that crap about born again” ( as my father is now professed born again christian). Does she still think to have a symbolic knife in her back due to her thinking, rather, perceiving that my father walked out on us. Still living at home, I don’t know what to think. I pray so often that the Lord will work to bring her to him.
I do know one thing, the past couple days God has been showing me what he really asks. To feed him, clothe him, shelter him, love our father in heaven, love our neighbor, love ourself,
” I was wandering, and you took me not in; without clothing, and you gave me no clothing; ill, and in prison, and you came not to me. ”
Basically do the opposite of this.
The rest of the quote goes as:
“They, too, will ask, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or as a stranger or in need of clothes or sick or in prison and didn’t help you?’
Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
These people will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.”
What I really am getting at is that one day we WILL be before the lord of judgement and so we will be ultimately responsible for all our actions. And though we may have gotten divorced along the way, or committed adultery, or what ever your sin is that you KNOW is separating you from God. What I’m really trying to say is that, God can take a ‘shitty’ situation and make it a mural like an art piece. And when I make reference using that word I best describe it, the situation that is. It is when we submit on full to the Lord and that when open that interface, daily, between us and God, and his son, Yeshua Meshiach ( thats Hebrew for Jesus ), he will really work through us. Really!

Most of these peoples comments are exactley what makes it hard for Christs message to be heard.. God is using Joel for God’s purpose And Gods way, .. Its funny how you scrap and scrape for something to pin on him. ripping someone is what people are so good at.. Its ridiculous.. If you listen to his message and know the Bible and messege it brings everything he preaches is Christ. And lessons God wants us to know. God is using Joel his way just like God uses other pastors there way to preach. And the comment left earlier sayin Joel should give all that money to africa, the poor, and education program.. How do you know he doesnt already. So dont assume and judge..AGAIN Point is God is using Joel to bring people closer to God the way he is using Joel..Just like he uses other pastors there way.. and all the nay sayers know one is perfect.. So dont act or write like you are. If you have an open mind and really let God come and speak to you, you will see the message from GOD that Joel is bringing. And How much God loves us and what he did for us and does for us every second of everyday..I suggest we look at ourselves and try to listen to what God is trying to do in our lives and how much God wants a relationship with us. Anthony said if you knew the BIBLE, well anthony if you knew the BIBLE you would know you can`t follow any preacher no matter who he is, when he says he don`t know if people are wrong for not believing on JESUS, well anthony tell us who do you think we should believe on?, so why would anyone follow a teacher like this?, forget about his money, son money won`t do you any good if you have a warped doctrine.
